The Moulin Rouge was built in eighteen eighty nine by night club owner Joseph Oller in the red light district of Pigalle, Paris. In French Moulin rouge means red mill and when you see the building you will know why. The club was a place to meet, eat dinner and take in the shows and the now famous show girls, it was a place where society mixed and inhibitions were left at the doors, the heady mix of French glamour and Japanese art made for a very bohemian atmosphere. This influence has been massive on western culture for the past hundred years, with the fashion styles, music and the romance of the Moulin Rouge appearing on stage and screen every now and then to renew interest.
The club is still going strong today with thousands of tourists flocking to get a look at the place and watch a show on the famous stage where Sinatra, Presley and Yvette Guilbert once stood and entertained the French people, but with out doubt the main attraction are the Can Can Girls with their high kicks and garter belts. A nice story about the King and the Rouge is when Elvis was stationed in Germany during the war, he and his army buddies took a trip to the club whilst on leave. The girls were so taken with Elvis that they all went back to his hotel after the last performance and were still there when the next show started, a frantic manager was on the phone to Elvis complaining that he couldn’t start his show. When Elvis asked why, he replied that, ALL of his girls were in Elvis’s room. Apparently Elvis hadn’t realised the extent of his little party and was rather embarrassed in a light hearted way, he promptly retuned all the girls to the Moulin.
