Stilt walkers have been around for years, entertaining in the circus and other production troupes for the masses for adoring, and paying public, but like everything the stilt was first used for practical reasons rather than for titillation. In Gascony the terrain was so unpredictable and as there were no roads it was sometimes impossible for the workers and farmers to navigate a good path over the waste lands. The ground was covered densely with bush and shrub meaning walking over was hard work when dry and when wet the land turned to one big bog or a marsh land. The farmers often had walking staffs with them when tending their flocks to aid movement and it is probably these sticks that gave them the idea of the walking stilts. Walking on the long poles allowed the farmers to cross the waste lands with ease and gave them a better panoramic view of their surroundings and the extra length allowed them to cover distance much quicker.
Once the aristocracy got on to the stilt walkers it soon became part of the entertainment with the ladies of Empress Josephine’s court delighting in making the stilt walkers race for money and from these origins developed the circus stilt performers.
